What is the Purpose of a “Baby on Board Sign,” Anyway?
Before I had a baby on board, I used to think that people put the “Baby on Board” signs in their window in an effort to ask me and other drivers to be more careful while driving near their car and their baby.
Since Daniel has come into our lives, I have realized that it is actually a warning or an apology to other drivers for the way I am driving now that I have a baby on board.
I think that it is just another version of a student driver sign on a car.
The sign should read;
“I am learning to drive with a baby/child in the back seat!”
Since I put a child seat in the back of my car, I take turns slower, go over dips or bumps more cautiously and tend to drive closer to the speed limit, all of which really pisses off other California drivers.
How We Really Drive in Southern California
I don’t think I realized it before, but in my mind, I was in a constant race to get where I was going. Like my own personal Indy 500. It didn’t matter that the other drivers didn’t know that we were racing, but let’s face it, we are in Southern California, of course everyone else thinks it’s a race.
The realization struck me when I was driving alone for the first time in a couple of days.
- I had the freedom to roll through the red while making a right.
- I don’t have to think about taking a turn too sharply, so his little head doesn’t whip across his car seat.
- Who stops on the yellow? People with babies in the car.
- I jumped on to the freeway, ramped up to speed and kept pace with the rest of the racers, bumper to bumper at 80 mph.
It is clear to me now. They are warning signs!
Hey Bad Guys, Look Over Here
Another thing I used to think when I saw a “Baby on Board” sign in a car was that they are advertising to every creep in the area that they have a baby!!!
In my mind that is like posting a sign that you do business in cash only! “Hey bad guys, steal from me!!!”
We have enough to worry about when it comes to keeping our baby safe. There is no need to advertise.
Look At Me, I Have a Family
I also think that “Baby on Board” signs are just saying to the world, “I have a baby!” It is just another version of the people who put stick figure stickers on their rear window showing: daddy, mommy, boy, boy, girl, dog, cat.
I think that we have a need in this country or maybe just as human beings, to be recognized for what we have accomplished. Having a child and a family is an accomplishment.
We Have One, Too
As you can see from the photo, we have a “Baby on Board” sign. It has been sitting on the counter for at least two months.
I am not sure if Lynn wants me to put it in my car, if she wants it in her car or if she is not sure about them either. I suspect, now that I have shared my thoughts with the world, that we will make a bold decision later today.
If you happen to see me driving around Southern California with my “Baby on Board” sign proudly displayed in my window, just know that I am warning you that I will be driving more responsibly and that may cause you some irritation.
NOTE: I was discussing this blog with a young mother and she told me that she believes that “Baby on Board” signs were created and used to notify law enforcement that there was (or may have been) a baby on board, which may have been ejected from the vehicle, in the case of an accident.
